A man lost his life at Madogo in Bura Sub-county after a hippo that was grazing in his farm attacked.
58 year old Hassan Balali went for a routine check on his farm after the morning prayer (Fajr prayer) only to bump into the beast which attacked him and fatally wounded him.
The deceased leaves behind 2 widows and 11 children of school going age.
Farmers in the area have recently lamented a surge in cases of human-wildlife conflict with the increase of hippos along the River Tana as the beasts normally graze on farms along the river bank at night wreaking havoc on crops besides causing fear among residents.
Residents and local leaders are now calling on the Kenya Wildlife Service ( KWS) to compensate the family of the deceased especially to help cater for the education of his children left behind since he was the family’s sole breadwinner.
