Hola Boys School are the new Tana River County secondary school champions in the U20 category after beating former three time defending champions Garsen high school 1-0 on their own home turf.
The all important goal was nodded in by Dennis Kioko in the 74th minute.
It was a tense match from the off as Garsen came flying out of the blocks putting the visitors under pressure with their characteristic direct play.
Garsen striker Salim Kofa thought he had the ball in the net in the 17th minute but was correctly flagged offside.
The Garsen striker soon had his head in his hands once again when an inviting cross from the right had Barracks custodian Mohamed Salim flapping but somehow the striker completely missed the ball when it was easier to score.
Hola Boys soon composed themselves and fashioned out an opportunity of their own but Ismail Gababo fired wired from range. The Barracks hitman soon fired on target but straight into the arms of custodian Mohamed Ali.
Hola Boys soon had captain Mohamed Hamara to thank when the skipper’s well timed challenge nicked the ball away with Garsen forward Salim Kofa lurking. Said Babusa and midfield dynamo Yusuf Noor both of Hola Boys went into the book in quick succession as the second stanza wound up with Hola head coach Allen Soye bringing on winger Yakub Bile for Hassan Oré in a tactical switch.
The Barracks came to life in the second half and soon it was Musa Chatu’s turn to take one for the team as Ismail Gababo turned around sweetly and struck a fine low shot that was destined for the bottom left hand corner but the defender blocked superbly with his goalkeeper beaten.
Dennis Kioko was played through on goal and the 17- year old forced a save out of Ali and Gababo fired wide with the goal at his mercy.
Gababo soon turned provider in apparent fortuitous fashion as the goal arrived. The striker sprang the offside trap forcing Ali to come off his line. Gababo lobbed the goalkeeper but his strike was headed wide but Kioko reacted quickest than the Garsen defence to nod home.
Garsen soon had an opportunity of their own when Salim made a hash of a harmless ball to Idyema as the goalkeeper attempted to clear the ball and instead fouled the striker just outside the penalty area. However, the ensuing set piece was fired straight into the wall and Garsen keeper Ali soon got caught out again with substitute Bile shooting wide with the gaping goal at his mercy.
Garsen buoyed by the crowd piled the pressure on the Barracks defence held out for a famous win against the team that beat them in the group stage by the same margin.
