The county government of Tana River through the department of education, vocational training, youth sports and gender services will launch an annual football tournament on the 26th February, 2019.
The tournament which will be launched at Hola show ground at 3pm, will be officially launched by Tanariver County Governor, Rtd Major Dhadho Godhana.
The tournament which will be run by an Organizing committee in coordination with the Department of sports has been themed PROTECTING THE YOUTH FROM RADICALISATION AND EXTREME VIOLENCE.
The use of sports to curb radicalisation is seen as a big step noting the proximity of Tana County to the war torn Somalia where the Alshabab Militia is intent on imposing a radical Islamist rule. Tana River youth are viwed as vulnerable to being lured to join the rug-tag militia owing to the high poverty levels and unemployment in the County.
Besides occupying the youth, the tournament is also a step forwad in exposing footballing talent which is clearly abundant but has not been tapped due to lack of exposure and poor scouting which the regional government aims to achieve.
